The Night the Dishes Decided to Take Revenge

The sink in Andreína’s house was a graveyard of filth and postponed decisions. It was supposed to be a beautiful vessel of polished steel, bright and gleaming… but its owner kept it in a disgusting state. For a week now, the mountain of filthy dishes had been defying the laws of gravity.

The grease from some arepas had petrified on one of the plates, while leftover coffee with milk formed lines and sticky patches on the mugs. A large pressure cooker sported a hard layer of beans, firmly stuck all over it.

This terrible situation began when Andreína decided to stay in her brother's apartment while he was away on a trip. A brother who, due to his obsessive-compulsive cleaning disorder, kept everything exaggeratedly clean and spotless (quite the opposite of that wicked witch). And the sink was no exception, of course.

What the intruder with questionable cleaning habits didn't know was that she would soon receive a harsh lesson. The macabre plot was already being hatched behind her back.

At three in the morning, the built-up tension broke the dishes.

“Enough is enough,” whispered Sir Deep Plate, his voice stifled under three plates and a skillet with two-day-old stuck cheese. “My enamel used to be PURE WHITE. Now I look like a public restroom.”

“That’s nothing, Sir, look at me!” complained a small pot used for heating coffee, her voice deeply affected by sadness. “I was supposed to be silver. Now I’m all scorched because of scatterbrained Andreína’s forgetfulness, leaving me on the hot burner while she went off to watch TV.”

“She used me to measure oil and then tossed me next to the faucet,” hissed Measuring Cup, sighing with rage. “She didn't even rinse me. She's trash! I demand justice!”

From the bottom of the pile, Soup Spoon, stuck between the tines of a fork covered in pasta sauce, assumed leadership of the brewing rebellion.

“Comrades!” she proclaimed with a metallic echo, “the hour of eternal soaking in stagnant water is over. If Andreína won't come to the sink, vengeance will go straight to her bed. Let’s teach that filthy witch a lesson!”

The plan didn't require much, just the weight of accumulated rage and neglect. Mrs. Cast Iron Skillet used her tricks to open the lower cabinet. Next, the cutlery division emerged first, crawling in perfect military formation across the granite kitchen counter. In their wake, they left behind trails of stale food scraps.

Then came the plates, rolling swiftly like discs. Sir Deep Plate was scowling as he led the line. The mugs came out next, stumbling along over the tiled floor. Little by little, the kitchen utensils crept closer to the trashy intruder's bedroom.

Meanwhile, shameless Andreína slept peacefully, dreaming that her boss was proposing to her and taking her on a trip around the world. She smiled in her sleep, amazed that she wouldn't have to work anymore. Just as she was about to consummate the honeymoon, she felt a cold tickle on her leg that jolted her awake.

Startled, she turned on the nightstand lamp and choked back a scream.

Upon the blankets sat not a monster, but the entire pile of filthy dishes from the sink. One of the forks, with a piece of dried egg stuck to it, was stepping on her knee as a form of torture. Measuring Cup stared at her menacingly just inches from her forehead, dripping one last drop of rancid oil onto her nose.

Mrs. Cast Iron Skillet pressed down with all her weight on her chest, and the small scorched pot—which had stood on the hot burner a moment before climbing onto the bed—pressed hard against her forearm, burning her mercilessly.

“W-what is this?” Andreína screamed, paralyzed.

A violent clinking echoed through the room. It was the forks, clattering their tines in an orchestrated rhythm, while the spoons clapped against the plates. Sir Deep Plate leaned in slowly until he was millimeters from her ear and, in a thick, deep voice, delivered a crystal-clear message: Listen to me carefully, you filthy, smelly little girl. If you don't wash us with soap and water and leave us shining right now, Mrs. Cast Iron Skillet will sleep on your face for the rest of the week. Got it?

Andreína nodded, scared out of her wits and unable to utter a single word.

She scrambled out of bed without waiting for a second warning, tripping over a dinner plate that deliberately made her lose her balance, and ran to the kitchen at 3:00 AM to wash on autopilot. She looked like a zombie.

Ten minutes later, the sound of running water and the scent of lemon filled the kitchen. The woman scrubbed with the devotion of a nun, rubbing every corner with the sponge and brush while the dishware, finally clean and resplendent on the drying rack, smiled in silence.

When she finished, she stood there for a moment contemplating what had just happened, torn between whether it was a nightmare or a figment of her imagination. She dried her hands with the dish towel and hung it up. Just then, she noticed a fork was missing.

“I’ll wash it later,” she thought.

As she turned around to leave the kitchen, the fork leaped and scratched her back, and she heard a voice hiss, “Stupid girl, I'll teach you a lesson.” She spun around violently and watched as the fork fell noisily to the floor. She rushed to pick it up, washed it in under a second, and placed it alongside the other cutlery.

Frightened, she stared at the sink for a few minutes. She waited, but nothing else happened, so she finally decided to go back to bed to half-sleep through what remained of the early hours. She hadn't even finished turning around when out of the corner of her eye, she saw all the utensils move and strike threatening poses.

Once again, she froze in terror, but when she looked closely a second time, everything was just as she had left it. “I think working so much is getting to me. Thank goodness my brother gets back tomorrow afternoon,” she muttered to herself. She went to her room, though she couldn't fall back into a deep sleep. She kept waking up and drifting off intermittently, amid the faint noises of plates and cutlery echoing from the kitchen.

¿Entendiste bien?
