Story: The Eye That Never Slept

There was a street that didn't appear on any map. No one could remember it once they had walked down it; it was like a kind of black hole, a vestige of a memory that hadn't quite taken root in their minds before fading away. Those who passed by spoke of a wall covered by a blue eye and a sort of stone mask, so large that it looked like the face of an ancient god.

However, whenever people tried to return to that place, the memory slipped away… like a dream that fades upon waking. It was very strange because they were certain they were forgetting something important, and yet, no matter how hard they tried to dig into their minds, they couldn’t find anything.

So it became a legend, a sort of urban myth, because the “trick” was triggered when passersby were about to turn back—something or someone would erase their memories of that place. That’s why no one could figure out what was really happening. Those who had heard the story without ever having come across that street were the ones who remembered the details of that wall most vividly.

But as is often the case, there’s an exception to every rule. There was one person who could actually remember the street. The sort of trick that made everyone else forget never worked on her.

Dinora had been dreaming about that place for years. In every dream, exactly the same thing happened: she would walk curiously toward the wall; the eye would stare intently at her, moving and blinking… and a voice she couldn’t quite describe would repeat a phrase to her: “Look who’s looking at you.” Just at that moment, she would wake up before she could understand what it meant.

She never gave up and kept looking for that street. “I know I’ll find it again someday,” she told herself. Until one afternoon, the miracle happened by accident: she was walking down the avenue when a motorcyclist nearly ran her over. After the motorcyclist hurled several insults at her “for being right in the middle of the road,” Dinora had to cross in the wrong place to keep dodging the man, who decided to chase after her to keep insulting her.

She ran and turned down a cobblestone street, and after walking for a while, breathless, she realized she didn’t know where she was. She turned around to make sure the motorcyclist hadn’t taken the same route. Sure enough, she had managed to escape, but she still didn’t feel safe; for some reason, she had the feeling that someone was watching her.

She walked a little farther as she watched in horror as the cobblestone street and the traffic light visible a few meters away disappeared. She felt a strong wind ruffle her hair, and suddenly she found herself standing in front of the wall: there it was—the blue eye staring at her again, and the giant face.

Dinora rested her hand on the bricks, which felt very hot to her—something she found strange. Then the mask breathed, and the entire wall did the same; it was like a deep exhalation. She jumped back, convinced that it had been a complete mistake to try to find out more about that mysterious wall.

Just as she was about to turn around, the bricks began to shift like the parts of an invisible mechanism, forming an opening behind her face. All she could see was a liquid darkness that seemed to absorb everything. Driven by curiosity, Dinora decided to go inside, and as soon as she did, she realized she wasn’t walking—rather, she was floating as if she were “being remembered,” or at least that’s what she understood.

On the other side of that place, there was no sky, no ground, no walls… the city hung suspended in a strange, infinite void, crisscrossed by millions of filaments of light that descended upon every human being. As she looked up, the curiosity that had driven her at first turned to terror: from a sort of window, she saw dozens of figures wearing white, smooth, expressionless masks.

They didn’t speak to one another; they simply waved their hands to make thousands of people change direction, forget a memory, want to buy something, hate a stranger, or kill someone in a fit of rage. They didn’t look like the rulers of any nation, nor did they look like aliens… Who were they? Dinora dubbed them “archons” because they manipulated human will with terrifying precision.

He wanted to scream with all his might, but “something”—he couldn’t even define it—caught his attention. Above the archons was something that defied all logic. They weren’t bodies. They weren’t machines. They were constantly shifting forms, like enormous shadows. Every time one of those “entities” vibrated, thousands of ideas descended upon the masked figures he had seen first.

And those figures were in charge of distributing them among humanity. A war, a fashion trend, a disease, a revolution… everything seemed to exist there first, suspended in that place where thought was born before words. A chill ran down Dinora’s spine. How many of her decisions were truly her own? What was all of that? Are we in a simulation?

Suddenly, something unexpected happened. Before she could fully process what was before her eyes, one of those shadowy entities slowly turned toward her. It had no face, but she knew it was looking at her. The other entities did the same, and the masked figures raised their heads in unison, stopping their manipulation of the strings…

Everything fell silent, and a booming voice cut through the void: “She has found the entrance.” Another voice replied, “How did she do it?” A third, deeper voice asked, “Who dreamed it?” Silence reigned for a minute until someone spoke again: “She did.” At that moment, the entities began to vanish one by one. The masked figures cracked as if they were made of stone, making a tremendous noise. The filaments holding the humans in place snapped immediately.

The city folded in half as if it were a sheet of paper, and everything vanished with a sharp crack. Dinora realized that this wasn’t something mystical, but a mural. Absolutely her entire reality—the people, the city, the entities, the masks, her life, herself… Everything was part of an immense painting viewed from a place no one could reach.

She tried to escape, but that was precisely the problem… there was nothing; now absolute darkness reigned. She decided to run with all her might, and giant brushstrokes appeared, blocking her path. When she turned around again, she saw the gigantic stone face smiling at her with a wicked grin; it opened its mouth, and Dinora felt herself being sucked into it.

An unbearable chill ran through her body as her skin began to harden, transforming into a sculpture. She lost her color, and her breath turned to stone. She tried to close her eyes, but she could no longer move them; she remained frozen and motionless next to the mask and the blue eye. Now she could feel the wall behind her.

A few hours later, a man walked down that forgotten street and stopped in front of the mural. He frowned because he could have sworn there had been only a stone mask and an eye before. Or had there? He wasn’t sure and didn’t understand why. Now there was a young woman with an expression of such deep, human sadness that a tear escaped the man’s eye. After standing there a little longer, gazing at the mural, he decided to continue on his way as if nothing had happened.

No eran cuerpos. No eran máquinas.

¿O no?
