A male fruit fly now has a full wiring diagram. The surprises are small and weird.

Janelia, Cambridge, the MRC Lab of Molecular Biology, and Google Research published a complete connectome of a male fruit fly this week in Cell. That means a list of every neuron they could find, where it sits, and what it touches. The count they are quoting is more than 166,000 neurons across the brain, both optic lobes, and the ventral nerve cord, with hundreds of millions of synapses. A female map already existed. Having both is the part that matters.

They sliced a dissected brain into a huge stack, imaged it with electron microscopy, then used models to stitch the gaps, trace membranes through 3D space, and mark synapses. Gerry Rubin at Janelia said a team of about 50 people did Drosophila. The hope is a mouse, with a thousand times more neurons, still takes a team of 50, not 50,000. Michal Januszewski at Google put it bluntly: you cannot hire your way out of this. The computers have to do the tracing.

The sex comparison is what I kept reading. They found 289 male-only neurons, 71 female-only ones, and 138 that exist in both sexes but grow a different shape or wiring. Most of those sit away from raw sensation and muscle control. They pile up in the middle layers, the bits that decide what a smell or a glimpse is for. Two neuron types that help a female respond to mating even show up in males, same basic shape, even though the tissue they talk to does not exist there. The difference is the connections they make.

One hemisphere of the male they mapped was missing a neuron that the female map has. One fly. One glitch. You cannot say how common that is until someone does this dozens of times, and this first pass took about four years. Rubin said theorists used to ask how a brain could work. Now they have a diagram and have to ask how this wiring produces a behavior.

That is a quieter story than a new chatbot, and I like it more. A fly is still a fly. It is also the first time we can walk from the eyes, through the neck, down to the legs, on an adult animal that actually has those parts.
