Oasis turned a Venice premiere into a mosh pit

Venice is usually tuxedos and polite clapping. Saturday night on the Lido, people chanted Oasis at Liam and Noel Gallagher like they were waiting outside a football ground. Someone flew a Manchester City flag over a balcony. Fans in bucket hats sang Wonderwall on the carpet before the brothers even showed up.
The film is Don't Look Back in Anger, directed by Dylan Southern and Will Lovelace, with Steven Knight as the writer-producer. It follows last year's reunion tour and the first joint interviews the brothers have given in twenty years. Knight keeps saying the movie is about reconciliation. That word feels too tidy for two men who spent a decade and a half not speaking, then walked back onstage and sold out stadiums anyway.
Variety clocked an eight-minute standing ovation. The crowd clapped after songs in the film. People cried through Champagne Supernova. Liam, who has never been a film-festival animal, checked his watch and mouthed something like, should we leave? Knight talked him into staying. Then the Gallaghers dropped into the aisle for autographs and the theater turned into a mild mosh pit. That is not how the Sala usually ends a screening.
I have not seen the cut yet. It hits cinemas on 11 September, then Disney+ later this year (Hulu as well in the US). Still, the premiere already did the thing Oasis always did: it made a formal room forget its manners.
