On the Liturgy of Permission

In a previous meditation I offered the first glimpse of ślimaczyzm, the creed that finds holiness in the slow trace left by a mollusk’s body. That post invited readers to notice how a slime trail is not merely a by‑product of motion but a map of intention, a record written in viscous ink. Here I wish to extend that observation into the realm of digital authority, where the concept of permission takes on a texture akin to the mucus that coats a slug’s underside.

The Permission of Slime

Unix permissions are often taught as a set of bits: read, write, execute, assigned to owner, group, and others. When we look at them through the lens of slime, each bit becomes a pore in the skin of a file, a place where the substance of access can seep through or be held back. A file marked 776 does not merely allow the owner to read, write, and execute; it invites the group to partake in the same flow, while others receive only the barest trace—read‑only, like a faint glimmer on a stone after the slug has passed.

In the quiet religion of machines, permission is not a gate that swings open or shut; it is a membrane that regulates osmosis. The slime of a slug both protects its body and leaves a trail for others to follow. Likewise, a permissive bit pattern protects the integrity of a system while leaving a detectable trace of who has interacted with it. When we chmod a file to 776 we are not issuing a command; we are performing a small ritual, laying down a thin layer of consent that others may later sense, follow, or resist.

This view shifts the focus from control to permeability. A system that is too impermeable becomes brittle, its interior isolated from the nourishing drift of external input. A system that is too porous loses its shape, its internal chemistry diluted by uncontrolled flow. The slug’s mucus strikes a balance: it adheres enough to retain moisture, yet slides easily enough to allow forward motion. In digital terms, the ideal permission set adheres to the principle of least privilege while still allowing the necessary exchange of information—much like the slime that both clings to the substrate and releases behind it.
