WHAT MOTHERHOOD REALLY LOOKS LIKE

Can I be honest?
I’m not a mom yet.
But today I spent the day with my sister and her 3-year-old.lol And I saw motherhood up close. The part they don’t put on Instagram.
It started with juice on the couch. For the 3rd time this week 😅 She snapped. "Why can’t you just be careful?!" Then she immediately looked guilty. Picked him up and said "Sorry baby, mummy is just tired."
By 8pm I was helping her pick up toys while she scrolled her phone. I saw the "perfect mom" posts. Homemade meals. Crafts. Calm voices. And then I looked at her. Takeout on the table. Hair in a bun. Eyes tired. She whispered to me "I feel like I’m failing today."
And that broke me.
Because I used to think being a good mom meant getting everything right and doing. No yelling. No mess. No bad days. But watching her today taught me something else.
Motherhood is messy. It’s burnt food and "5 more minutes" of cartoons because you need to breathe. It’s loving a tiny human so much it hurts, and also needing 10 minutes alone in the car.
She didn’t cook. But later she had a dance party in the kitchen with him while waiting for food. She yelled. But then she wiped his tears and said "Mummy was tired, not mad at you."
He won’t remember the juice. He’ll remember the dance.
So to all the mamas reading this — I’m not a mom yet. But from where I’m standing, you’re doing better than you think. Even on the days you cry in the bathroom for 5 minutes.
The laundry can wait. The dishes can wait. But the hug? The "I’m sorry"? The "I love you"? That can’t wait.
Mamas, help me understand — What’s one thing you wish people who are NOT moms yet knew about motherhood?
I’m All ears. And learning. Because one day that might be me you know.
