[Edaily reporter Kwon Oh-seok] U.S. President Donald Trump shared a media column on his social media stating that South Korea should be pressured to sell the Korean-made medium-range surface-to-air guided missile, “Cheongung-II,” to Ukraine. Just days after publicly expressing dissatisfaction over South Korea’s lack of cooperation on the Iran-related situation, it appears to be stepping up pressure once again.
According to a Washington Post (WP) column shared by President Trump on the 4th (local time), it contained the idea that even if Ukraine receives permission from the United States to produce Patriot missiles, President Trump should pressure South Korea to sell the Cheongung-II, the “Korean version of Patriot,” because interceptor missiles are urgently needed.
Mark Thiessen, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) who contributed this column, is regarded as a pro-Trump figure advising President Trump. Researcher Thyssen said, “President Trump is already angry that South Korea has refused to support the Strait of Hormuz,” adding, “From South Korea’s standpoint, there is no better way to improve relations with the U.S. than this.”
Earlier, during the first Trump administration, former Vice President Mike Pence also proposed that South Korea provide the U.S. with its own interceptor missiles so they could be deployed in Ukraine and elsewhere.
