Crypto Market Update — August 28, 2026
Bitcoin has done something the market had been waiting for.
After weeks of weakness and uncertainty, BTC broke above $80,000 and reached around $81,000+ earlier this week.
But now the market faces a much more interesting question:
If Bitcoin has already broken $80K, why hasn't a broad altcoin season started yet?
This is where the current market becomes very interesting.
Because Bitcoin is moving.
Ethereum is moving.
Solana is outperforming Bitcoin.
XRP has also shown strong momentum.
But the broader altcoin market is still not showing the kind of strength normally associated with a confirmed altcoin season.
BITCOIN'S AUGUST RALLY HAS BEEN IMPRESSIVE
Bitcoin entered August around the low $60,000s.
Since then, BTC has staged a powerful recovery.
The cryptocurrency eventually broke through $80,000, reaching roughly $81,200 at its recent peak.
Reuters reported that Bitcoin was up around 28% for August after the move above $80,000, with the rally supported by a weaker U.S. dollar and expectations surrounding Treasury bond-market interventions.
This is not a small recovery.
It represents a major change in market sentiment.
Only a few weeks ago, investors were questioning whether Bitcoin could remain above $60,000.
Now the conversation has shifted toward:
Can BTC continue toward $90,000 or even $100,000?
But Bitcoin's next move may not be the most important question anymore.
The bigger question is what happens to the capital underneath Bitcoin.
THE GLOBAL CRYPTO MARKET IS RECOVERING
The total cryptocurrency market capitalization is now around $2.8 trillion.
Bitcoin remains the dominant asset, with BTC representing roughly 57.8% of total crypto market capitalization according to CoinGecko's latest market data.
That number tells us something important.
Bitcoin has rallied strongly, but capital has not yet completely rotated away from BTC.
This is one reason the current market should not automatically be called a full altcoin season.
Bitcoin is still absorbing a huge amount of the market's liquidity.
ETH AND SOL ARE SHOWING SOMETHING DIFFERENT
The interesting part is that some major altcoins have started to outperform Bitcoin.
Ethereum has been particularly strong.
Recent market data showed ETH gaining significantly against BTC, with ETH's BTC pair improving by more than 30% from its June low.
Solana is also showing impressive relative strength.
SOL recently traded around $109, reaching its highest level of the year while Bitcoin was still around the $80,000 area.
This is exactly the kind of movement we want to see before a broader rotation.
But there is an important distinction.
Some altcoins outperforming Bitcoin does not automatically mean the entire altcoin market has entered altseason.
THE ALTCOIN SEASON INDEX IS STILL WARNING US
This is probably the most important data point right now.
BlockchainCenter's Altcoin Season Index is currently around 39/100.
That means the market is still classified as Bitcoin Season, not Altcoin Season.
According to the index methodology, altcoin season requires at least 75% of the Top 50 cryptocurrencies to outperform Bitcoin over the previous 90 days.
Another market tracker currently shows an even lower reading around 32, also indicating Bitcoin Season.
The exact number differs depending on the methodology and universe of coins used.
But the message is similar:
We are not yet seeing broad-based altcoin dominance.
