The End of August

August is almost over, gently and slowly, for now. I'm already witnessing signs of autumn here, but I'm trying not to notice them too much. Once I officially accept autumn, it will speed up to match how I feel. The little sunflower looks pretty next to the squash.

I stopped writing my blog for a week, even though I had things I wanted to write about. I don't know why, but I just couldn't write last week. My days were a bit busy.

I hear crickets every night through my bedroom window. They are busy singing, too. Crickets are hard workers, but I think they also enjoy their lives and their music. I don't know why, but whenever I listen to the crickets, I remember the story of “The Ant and the Grasshopper” from Aesop.

> The ants worked hard and stored food for the winter. The grasshopper sang and played all day during the spring and summer. When winter came, the ants had enough to eat, but the grasshopper had nothing and was very cold and hungry in the story.

When I was little, I liked grasshoppers, so I felt bad for them. I think I like most insects, which is why I felt bad imagining that some of them might not have enough food for the winter, like the grasshopper in the story. Yes, I know it's a moral story... Usually, in “The Ant and the Grasshopper,” the grasshopper is playing the violin. I thought, well, playing the violin is a good thing, though... That's why, whenever I hear the crickets, I remember the story. Crickets work so hard to entertain their surroundings by playing beautiful music.

Changing the topic to the photo of the Black-eyed Susans in front of the old wooden fence, I love these yellow flowers as well.

Oh, do you see someone sniffing the flowers? My dog always likes to be in photos like this. Hahaha. We are fixing and renovating our outdoor fences and other things, except for these old fences. Eventually, we have to fix these old fences, too, though.

We just found out that our local large-item garbage pickup days are no longer available. It used to be a seasonal event in this area when people could pick up furniture and other things that were still useful. I liked this recycling culture, but the system affected the condition of the roads quite a lot. Now, they have switched to allowing only two items to be put out on regular garbage collection days.

Preparing for autumn used to be a seasonal ritual for us, but not anymore. I don't need to work like the ants this August. I hear the crickets singing in my yard.

Today, finally, we had our first corn from our garden. They were small, but they were tasty. The nearest farm stand was selling beautiful, big ears of corn, and we enjoyed eating those as well. Growing corn is such a challenging task for us! 🌽
