Incident in a Ghostland: Psychologically Disturbing (2018). As I’ve said time and again, horror, suspense, thriller, drama, psychological horror, and home invasion movies are genres that catch my attention. In that regard, quite some time ago I saw a movie that, from my perspective, was extremely disturbing—namely, the film Martyrs by director Pascal Laugier. Now, what brings us to this discussion with you is a film by the same director, Pascal Laugier, who, coincidentally, also wrote the screenplay. We’re talking about Incident in Ghostland, which, as the title suggests, is psychologically disturbing.
A film that generates a great deal of anxiety and shows that no one is immune to suffering these traumas, which can be caused by completely deranged individuals. Simply put, the director—who is an expert in the field—manages to fill the audience with all kinds of emotions through scenes that, while having nothing to do with monsters or demons, are purely macabre. We feel as though we must step into the screen to try to help and prevent the protagonists from continuing to suffer as they do. All of this leads me to believe that Pascal seeks to shock the human mind, to the point of showing how a human being can endure such torture and how the mind can reshape a situation so that pain becomes a mere refuge; it truly is a film that sends chills down your spine and is utterly addictive.

The main roles—in this case—are divided into two stages. I say this because the sisters are portrayed in both their younger and adult versions. In that sense, Emilia Jones and Taylor Hickson play the sisters Beth and Vera, respectively. They are two young women with different personalities: Beth is a dreamer, passionate, and a fan of writing—especially horror stories. Vera is full of energy and rebellious, but both must face heart-wrenching events.
In the adult storyline, Crystal Reed plays Beth and Anastasia Phillips plays Vera; in both versions, the actresses deliver such realistic performances that they evoke a deep sense of anxiety in the viewer. The story begins in a typical way: the family has inherited a property, and the two girls, along with their mother, set out on the journey to their new home. On the road, they come across some people in a candy truck who insistently try to pass; they manage to do so, and everyone greets each other, but Vera—shocking as always—makes a rude gesture. Suddenly, they stop at a store, where Beth picks up a newspaper featuring a story about a family killer. He breaks into the property, and what he does to the adults and children is unthinkable—and that’s exactly what you’ll have to find out. For now, the family arrives at the house without incident.

The mother and her daughters settle into their home, and everything is going well; however, suddenly their home is invaded by two criminals, who brutally abuse the mother and the girls. The fight for survival is a matter of life and death, and each of them must do the impossible to ensure their survival. The scenes are truly disturbing and unnerving; the mother is thrown around just like the girls. They’re very weak, but as best she can, the mother draws strength from nowhere and apparently takes out the criminals. Suddenly, Beth wakes up as a full-fledged adult woman, as if it were all a dream.
Definitely; the director plays with our minds, but Beth has her life together—she has a family and is a famous writer. Now, not everything is rosy, because after a while she gets a call from Vera, who apparently hasn’t gotten over what happened. Beth has no choice but to return home to reunite with her mother and sister. Things can change drastically, and that’s when we realize that events aren’t what they seem. The plot twists are stunning, and viewers truly won’t see them coming—it’s a must-see movie; of course, you’ll have to tough it out like a warrior.

As for the setting and cinematography, from my perspective, every element or object in the house functions perfectly as a character. In particular, I wouldn’t want that house for anything—just walking in, you can tell how old and mysterious it is; the objects feel macabre, especially the dolls; I think Anabelle never grew out of diapers. Every corner of the house is synonymous with fear and confinement, and we definitely feel like we’re suffocating. The cinematography is brilliant and maintains a constant interplay between reality and the fantasy projected by the protagonists.
This movie tells a story that reminds us just how resilient people can be—especially women, who demonstrate incredible resilience in the face of adversity. This is evident in every blow and every act of torture the protagonists endure; they not only endure it, but also rise up against evil, trying to survive as best they can. For now, it’s a movie that—while admittedly quite intense—is worth watching and analyzing. Best regards, and see you soon.

Como he dicho en reiteradas ocasiones, las películas de terror, suspenso, thriller, drama, terror psicológico e invasión a la propiedad; son géneros que me llaman la atención. En tal sentido; hace bastante tiempo pude ver una película; que desde mi punto de vista fue extremadamente perturbadora, este fue el caso de la película Mártires del director Pascal Laugier. Ahora; lo que nos trae al encuentro con ustedes, es un filme del mismo director Pascal Laugier, que casualmente también fue el autor del guión. Y hablamos de Incidente en Ghostland, la cual es como dice el título; psicológicamente perturbadora.
Un filme que genera demasiada ansiedad y demuestra, que nadie está excepto a sufrir estos traumas que pueden ser causados por personas totalmente desquiciadas. Sencillamente; el director, quien es experto en la materia, logra que el público se llene de todo tipo de emociones, a través de escenas, que sin tener que ver con monstruos y demonios, son puramente macabras. Sentimos que debemos meternos en la pantalla, para tratar de ayudar y que las protagonistas no sigan sufriendo como lo hacen. Todo esto me lleva a pensar; que Pascal busca impactar en la mente humana, hasta el punto de ver como un ser humano puede resistir a tales torturas y como la mente puede cambiar un escenario, para que el dolor sea un simple refugio; de verdad que es una película que te da escalofríos y es totalmente Adictiva.

Las actuaciones principales; en este caso, están divididas en dos etapas. Digo esto; porque tenemos a las hermanas que se presentan en versiones jóvenes y adultas. En tal sentido; Emilia Jones y Taylor Hickson son las hermanas Beth y Vera respectivamente. Dos jóvenes con características diferentes; Beth es soñadora, apasionada y fanática a la escritura, especialmente las que tienen que ver con el terror. Vera, llena de energía y rebelde; pero ambas deben enfrentarse a eventos desgarradores.
En la etapa adulta, Crystal Reed es Beth y Anastasia Phillips encarna a Vera; en cualquiera de sus dos versiones, las actrices generan acciones tan reales, que logran en el espectador esa sensación de ansiedad profunda. La historia inicia de una manera normal; la familia ha heredado una propiedad y las dos niñas junto a su madre, emprenden el viaje hacia su nuevo destino. En la carretera se topan con unas personas en un camión de caramelos, los cuales tratan de pasar de forma insistente; logran hacerlo y todos se saludan, pero Vera chocante como siempre, hace un gesto grosero. De pronto se detienen en una tienda y allí Beth toma un periódico, donde aparece la noticia de un asesino de familias. Este invade la propiedad y lo que hace con los adultos y los jóvenes es impensable; precisamente esto es lo que debes descubrir; por lo pronto la familia llega a la casa sin problemas.

La madre y las niñas se instalan en casa y todo marcha bien; sin embargo, de pronto la residencia es violentada por dos criminales, quienes maltratan a todo dar a la madre y a las chicas. La pelea por la supervivencia es a muerte y cada una de ellas debe hacer lo imposible para que esto ocurra. De verdad que las escenas son perturbadoras y desquiciantes; la madre es lanzada por todos lados al igual que las chicas. Son muy débiles; pero como puede, la madre saca fuerzas de donde no las hay y al parecer elimina a los criminales. De pronto Beth despierta como toda una mujer adulta, pareciendo todo un sueño.
Definitivamente; el director juega con nuestra mente, pero Beth tiene su vida arreglada, tiene familia y es una famosa escritora. Ahora; no todo es color de rosas, porque al cabo de un tiempo recibe la llamada de Vera, quien al parecer no ha superado lo sucedido. Beth no tiene más remedio que volver a casa, para reencontrarse con su madre y su hermana. Las cosas pueden cambiar de forma drástica y es allí cuando nos damos cuenta, que los hechos no son como parecen. Los giros que ocurren son impresionantes y de verdad que el espectador no los verá venir, es una película que debes ver; claro está, que debes sorportar como un guerrero.

Con respecto a la ambientación y fotografía; desde mi punto de vista, cada elemento u objeto de la casa, funcionan perfectamente como un personaje. Particularmente; ni regalada quiero esa casa, solo al entrar se nota lo antigua y misteriosa que es; los objetos se sienten macabros, especialmente las muñecas; creo que Anabelle se quedó en pañales. Cada rincón de la casa es sinónimo de temor, de encierro y definitivamente sentimos que nos asfixiamos. La dirección fotográfica es genial y mantiene un juego constante entre la realidad y la fantasía que emiten las protagonistas.
Esta película es un historia que nos recuerda cuan resistente pueden ser las personas, especialmente las mujeres, quienes demuestran una resiliencia increíble ante las dificultades. Esto se demuestra en cada golpe y cada tortura que reciben las protagonistas; quienes más allá de resistir, también se levantan ante la maldad tratando de sobrevivir como pueden. Por lo pronto, es una película; que si bien es cierto, es demasiado fuerte, es digna de ver y analizar; saludos y nos vemos pronto.
