[Esp-Eng] Full Day in Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay

Continuing my March 2026 vacation, we spent a day in Colonia del Sacramento, an incredible place in Uruguay. To get there from Buenos Aires, we crossed the Río de la Plata by ferry and took a guided tour with lunch included for about $150 (round-trip fare for two people).
Continuando con mis vacaciones de marzo 2026 estuvimos un día por Colonia del Sacramento, un lugar increíble de Uruguay. Para llegar hasta allá desde Buenos Aires, cruzamos el río de la plata en Ferry, hicimos un tour con guía y almuerzo incluido por aproximadamente 150 dólares (pasaje ida y vuelta para dos personas).
The departure was scheduled for 8:30 a.m. from the terminal in Puerto Madero; the trip took about an hour and another 15 to 20 minutes or so. It was all very smooth—when I was a child, I used to travel by ferry twice a year, and I’d often get seasick, but that wasn’t the case this time. When we arrived, our guide was waiting for us. He very kindly explained in great detail the most iconic sites in the area and a bit of its history.
La salida estaba programada para las 08:30 de la mañana desde su terminal en Puerto Madero, el viaje duró 1 hora y unos 15 o 20 minutos más o menos. Todo muy tranquilo, porque cuando era niña solía viajar dos veces al año en Ferry por mar y muchas veces terminaba mareada, en esta ocasión no fue así. Cuando llegamos, nos estaba esperando nuestro guía, quien muy amablemente nos explicaba con mucho detalle sobre los lugares más emblemáticos del lugar y un poco de su historia.
It was very interesting to learn that this small city was occupied by the Portuguese during the colonial era before the arrival of the Spanish. I don’t know about you, but I love reading and learning about events from ancient times, so I found all that information very interesting. We toured the historic district, where you can see the contrast in Portuguese architecture—which is a bit different from the historic districts of other cities in Spanish America, where Spanish colonial architecture predominates.
Muy interesante saber que esta pequeña ciudad estuvo ocupada por portugueses en la época colonial antes de la llegada de los españoles. No sé a ustedes, pero a mí me encanta leer y conocer sobre hechos de la época antigua, as�� que toda esa información me pareció muy interesante. Estuvimos recorriendo el casco histórico donde se puede contrastar la arquitectura portuguesa, un poco diferente a los cascos históricos de otras ciudades de hispano américa donde predomina la arquitectura colonial española.
After noon, we all went to lunch. This meal was included in the tour (drinks not included), though it did include a main course and dessert—everything was delicious, and the service was excellent.
Pasado el mediodía, fuimos todos a almorzar, esta comida estaba incluida en el tour sin la bebida, aunque sí traía un plato principal y un postre, todo muy rico y la atención muy buena.
After lunch, everyone went their separate ways—the guided tour had already ended—so we spent some time exploring the streets at random. We also took the opportunity to buy some souvenirs to give as gifts and a few magnets for our fridge as another memento of our travels.
Después de la comida, cada quien tomó su rumbo, el tour con el guía ya había terminado, así que estuvimos explorando calles al azar. Además, aprovechamos para comprar algunos souvenirs para regalar y algunos imanes para nuestra nevera y así tener otro recuerdo de nuestros viajes.
One more thing worth noting: the tranquility you feel in Colonia del Sacramento is incredible; it’s undoubtedly a great option for those who want to escape the noise of big cities. People in Uruguay are also very friendly and love to make you feel at home. This trip was one of my favorites because, even though I like living in a big city, I often find the noise and traffic overwhelming. So it was perfect for unwinding for a while. Just before 5:00 p.m., we returned to the ferry terminal to check out, since this full-day tour ended at 6:00 p.m. We arrived back in Buenos Aires after a little over an hour; the return trip was also very peaceful. We’d love to return to both countries another time to continue exploring other places and gaining new experiences.
Algo más que destacar, la tranquilidad que se siente en Colonia del Sacramento es increíble, es sin duda una buena opción para los que quieren descontar del ruido de las grandes ciudades. La gente en Uruguay también es muy amable y les encanta hacerte sentir como en casa. Este paseo es de los que más me ha gustado porque si bien me gusta vivir en una ciudad grande muchas veces me abruma tanto ruido y el tráfico. Así que estuvo perfecto para desconectar un rato. Ya casi a las 17:00 horas volvimos al terminal de Ferry para hacer el check out, pues este full day terminaba a las 18:00. Llegamos a Buenos Aires de nuevo luego de una hora y un poco más, el viaje de vuelta también muy tranquilo. En otra ocasión nos encantaría volver a ambos países a seguir conociendo otros lugares y sumando nuevas experiencias.
